Flavorful Empowerment: The Heart of Alchi Kitchen and Ladakhi Cuisine [Women Entrepreneur Interviews]

Have you ever tasted a dish that transports you straight to the heart of a region’s culture? That’s what you’ll experience at Alchi Kitchen, an all-women-led restaurant in Ladakh.

Since 2016, this incredible venture has been dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich flavors of traditional Ladakhi cuisine while empowering women in the hospitality industry. We couldn’t wait to learn more about the vision behind Alchi Kitchen and the inspiring women driving its success. Let’s hear their story!

Tell us about your business. What is it about, and when did you start it?

My name is Nilza wangmo Lonpo and I run Alchi Kitchen, an all-women-led restaurant located in Ladakh, which we started in 2016. Our restaurant is unique because we specialize in traditional Ladakhi cuisine, offering both locals and tourists an authentic taste of our region.

From the very beginning, our goal has been to preserve and share Ladakhi food culture, while also empowering women through employment and leadership in the hospitality industry.

Can you share a bit about your background and what inspired you to start your business?

I’ve always worked closely with tourists throughout my career, and over time, I realized how much they appreciated the local culture and food. That inspired me to start Alchi Kitchen, a restaurant focused on authentic Ladakhi dishes.

My late mother was my biggest inspiration—she was a passionate cook and always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. I wanted to honor her by sharing our traditional recipes with the world and creating a space where women could work together and thrive in a field that’s typically male-dominated in our society.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting your business, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge was starting an all-women-run restaurant in a predominantly male-dominated society. There was a lot of skepticism, and many people doubted whether we could succeed. However, we were determined to prove that women could not only run a business but also excel in it.

We faced initial hurdles in gaining trust and respect, but through consistency, dedication, and the high quality of our food and service, we gradually earned the support of the community. Today, Alchi Kitchen stands as a symbol of what women can achieve when they support each other and work towards a shared vision.

Are there any books, icons, or role models that inspire you in your entrepreneurial journey? Tell us a little about them.

While I don’t have specific books or icons to mention, my late mother remains my greatest inspiration. Her strength, wisdom, and love for cooking have deeply shaped me.

Additionally, I draw inspiration from the everyday women around me who work hard and are determined to make their mark, despite the odds. I believe that our greatest role models often come from our own families and communities, teaching us resilience, determination, and grace.

What do you wish more people knew about women entrepreneurship?

I wish more people understood that women entrepreneurship is not just about starting businesses but about breaking barriers and changing societal perceptions.

Women have incredible potential, and with the right support and opportunities, they can thrive in any industry. I’d like to see more training and education opportunities for women, especially in rural areas, to equip them with the skills and knowledge to pursue their dreams.

Additionally, more mentorship and funding opportunities specifically aimed at women could make a huge difference in helping them overcome challenges and succeed.

What is the one thing you would like to say to other women who are pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams?

Stay focused and consistent with your work. Challenges will always come your way, but don’t be afraid of them—face them head-on. Every obstacle you overcome will make you stronger and teach you valuable lessons. Never let fear or doubt hold you back, and always believe in your ability to succeed.
